$1.185 Billion DuPont PFAS Settlement

Dr. Rosenfeld Collected and Analyzed Underlying Exposure Data

In June 2023, chemical manufacturers DuPont de Nemours, Corteva, Inc., and The Chemours Company agreed to establish a $1.185 billion settlement fund to resolve a large portion of multidistrict litigation (MDL) over PFAS (“forever chemicals”) contamination of U.S. public water systems. Under the agreement, the companies will collectively contribute to a fund aimed at reimbursing municipalities and water systems for remediation and treatment costs tied to PFAS contamination in drinking water—particularly linked to aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) used at military bases, airports, and industrial sites. A federal court in South Carolina approved the settlement, which covers systems with current or required PFAS monitoring, although it excludes personal-injury claims and state natural-resource damage claims.
