Case Study 22: Contaminated Landfill Air Dispersion Modeling

Contaminated Landfill Air Dispersion Modeling, Exposure Pathway Analysis, and Human Health Risk Assessment

RoseyFields conducted a comprehensive environmental assessment of a former waste disposal facility to evaluate the migration of hazardous contaminants and potential impacts to surrounding communities. Our team investigated environmental releases associated with historical waste management activities, fugitive dust generation, contaminated soil disturbance, and long-term contaminant transport. Chemicals of concern included dioxins, furans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other persistent organic pollutants commonly associated with industrial and municipal waste disposal operations. The project focused on understanding how contaminants migrated beyond facility boundaries and identifying potential exposure pathways affecting nearby residential and recreational areas.

We performed advanced environmental modeling and exposure analyses to evaluate the fate and transport of contaminants through air, soil, dust, surface water, and other environmental media. Technical evaluations included air dispersion modeling (AERMOD), particulate deposition analysis, fugitive dust emission estimation, contaminant migration assessment, GIS-based spatial analysis, environmental sampling review, and environmental forensics. Our team reconstructed historical emission scenarios associated with waste handling activities, vehicle traffic, soil disturbance, wind erosion, and other sources capable of generating airborne particulate matter. Atmospheric modeling was used to evaluate contaminant transport patterns, deposition rates, and potential long-term accumulation in surrounding areas.

To characterize potential community impacts, RoseyFields developed a comprehensive exposure assessment framework incorporating residential and recreational exposure pathways. Environmental sampling data, exposure point concentrations, and risk-based screening methodologies were integrated to evaluate potential human health risks associated with contaminant exposure. Using GIS mapping, receptor analysis, and risk assessment techniques, we identified areas with the greatest potential for exposure and delineated the geographic extent of potentially affected populations. This project demonstrates RoseyFields’ expertise in contaminated site investigations, air dispersion modeling, human health risk assessment, environmental exposure reconstruction, fate and transport analysis, contaminant deposition modeling, and community exposure evaluations.

This investigation was conducted under the direction of Dr. Paul Rosenfeld, an environmental scientist and environmental forensic expert with extensive experience in environmental exposure assessment, toxicology, air quality, environmental fate and transport, risk assessment, and environmental forensics. Through RoseyFields LLC, Dr. Rosenfeld provides scientific consulting, environmental forensic analysis, regulatory support, and expert witness services involving environmental contamination, human exposure, and public health. His technical oversight helped ensure that the methodologies, scientific interpretations, and conclusions presented in this case study are consistent with accepted scientific principles and current best practices.
