Case Study 17: Historical Air Emissions Reconstruction and Community

Historical Air Emissions Reconstruction and Community Exposure Risk Assessment for Industrial Facilities

RoseyFields conducted a retrospective environmental exposure assessment for a large industrial manufacturing facility with a history of hazardous air pollutant emissions. The project focused on evaluating historical releases of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), metals, and other air contaminants associated with industrial operations and determining their potential impacts on surrounding communities. Our team reviewed historical operational records, regulatory documents, emissions information, facility layouts, chemical usage data, and other environmental records to reconstruct historical emission sources and characterize long-term environmental conditions.

We performed advanced air dispersion modeling and environmental fate and transport analyses to estimate historical ambient air concentrations and evaluate contaminant migration from facility operations into nearby residential and commercial areas. The assessment included development of historical emissions inventories, source characterization, meteorological and terrain analysis, receptor grid design, atmospheric transport modeling, and evaluation of both stack and fugitive emission sources. Modeled concentrations were compared with regulatory screening levels and toxicological criteria to evaluate potential long-term exposure risks associated with inhalation of airborne contaminants.

RoseyFields also conducted human health risk assessments to characterize potential exposure among individuals living, working, or otherwise spending time within the area potentially affected by facility emissions. Using established regulatory methodologies, our team evaluated chronic inhalation exposure scenarios, reconstructed historical exposure conditions, and identified geographic areas where contaminant concentrations may have contributed to elevated health risks. This work highlights RoseyFields’ expertise in historical emissions reconstruction, air dispersion modeling, exposure pathway analysis, environmental fate and transport evaluation, community exposure assessment, and human health risk assessment for industrial and manufacturing facilities.

This investigation was conducted under the direction of Dr. Paul Rosenfeld, an environmental scientist and environmental forensic expert with extensive experience in environmental exposure assessment, toxicology, air quality, environmental fate and transport, risk assessment, and environmental forensics. Through RoseyFields LLC, Dr. Rosenfeld provides scientific consulting, environmental forensic analysis, regulatory support, and expert witness services involving environmental contamination, human exposure, and public health. His technical oversight helped ensure that the methodologies, scientific interpretations, and conclusions presented in this case study are consistent with accepted scientific principles and current best practices.
