Case Study 20: Industrial Cement Terminal Air Dispersion Modeling

Industrial Cement Terminal Air Dispersion Modeling, Fugitive Dust Assessment, and Community Exposure Evaluation

RoseyFields conducted a comprehensive environmental evaluation to assess the off-site migration and deposition of particulate matter and hazardous crystalline silica from a large-scale industrial bulk material handling and logistics facility. Our team performed this assessment to evaluate how fugitive emissions from complex, multi-point operational sources—including ship unloading, internal conveyor transfers, high-volume material packaging, and bulk vehicular transport—affect ambient air quality and surrounding properties. By analyzing the structural integrity of localized infrastructure and evaluating historical material-handling practices, we investigated systemic operational factors contributing to continuous environmental impacts.

Our technical team executed an advanced multi-layered analytical framework utilizing regulatory air dispersion modeling software to simulate atmospheric fate and transport. We developed detailed emission inventories based on reported material throughputs and localized meteorological data to model maximum hourly concentrations, annual averages, and long-term particulate deposition patterns. To supplement the air dispersion analysis, RoseyFields incorporated environmental forensics, utilizing laboratory testing data such as energy dispersive spectroscopy and mineralogical fingerprinting of soil and dust samples to distinguish industrial contaminants from typical urban background levels.

To characterize the potential exposure class and evaluate public health risks, we established a rigorous spatial receptor network extending outward from the facility boundaries. We utilized localized terrain parameters, discrete residential receptors, and peak-to-mean function scaling to extrapolate short-term, high-concentration exposure pathways. Through this multi-pronged methodology, RoseyFields successfully delineated the plume boundary and characterized the affected perimeter, providing data-driven insights into how persistent dust deposition and respirable silica trespass impact neighboring commercial and residential properties.

This investigation was conducted under the direction of Dr. Paul Rosenfeld, an environmental scientist and environmental forensic expert with extensive experience in environmental exposure assessment, toxicology, air quality, environmental fate and transport, risk assessment, and environmental forensics. Through RoseyFields LLC, Dr. Rosenfeld provides scientific consulting, environmental forensic analysis, regulatory support, and expert witness services involving environmental contamination, human exposure, and public health. His technical oversight helped ensure that the methodologies, scientific interpretations, and conclusions presented in this case study are consistent with accepted scientific principles and current best practices.
