RoseyFields conducted a comprehensive environmental evaluation and quantitative health risk assessment regarding historical contamination from a former organic chemical and herbicide manufacturing facility. Our team assessed the environmental impact of industrial operations that generated significant chemical impurities and by-products. We evaluated the release and accumulation of highly toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and specifically 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The assessment focused on understanding how atmospheric releases from continuous waste burning and manufacturing processes impacted the surrounding environment over an extended period of time.
To evaluate the extent of the contamination, our team performed a detailed environmental fate and transport analysis to determine how airborne emissions—occurring as fine particulates and residues bound to larger particles—dispersed and subsequently deposited onto soil and built surfaces within the surrounding community. RoseyFields analyzed extensive laboratory chemical analytical data, including multi-media environmental samples from surface soils and indoor dust. Utilizing these data, we applied standardized methodologies to calculate Toxicity Equivalency Factors (TEFs) and Toxicity Equivalents (TEQs) for various dioxin and furan congeners, enabling a rigorous evaluation of the incidental ingestion and direct inhalation exposure pathways.
Based on the environmental fate of the contaminants and the concentration of chemicals in residential soils and indoor dust, we characterized the potential exposure for populations living near the facility. We identified the affected populations by evaluating historical emission records in conjunction with residential proximity to the facility and the long-term environmental persistence of these organic pollutants. Finally, RoseyFields conducted a highly detailed quantitative risk assessment, calculating lifetime excess cancer risks and non-cancer hazard quotients to clearly define the chronic health impacts associated with long-term residential exposure to the identified chemicals of concern.
