Silicosis Part 1: What Makes Engineered Stone Different from Natural Stone?

Engineered stone is often marketed as a premium countertop material, but from a scientific perspective it differs substantially from natural stone. Unlike granite, marble, or limestone, engineered stone is a manufactured product composed primarily of finely crushed quartz particles that are bound together using polymer resins and pigments. Many engineered stone products contain more than 90 percent crystalline silica by weight, making them among the most silica-rich materials commonly encountered in construction and fabrication industries.

The high silica content alone makes engineered stone unique. When a countertop is cut, drilled, polished, or ground, microscopic particles are released into the air. Because engineered stone contains such large amounts of quartz, these activities can generate significantly greater concentrations of respirable crystalline silica than many natural stone products. The resulting dust is often composed of particles small enough to bypass the body’s natural respiratory defenses and reach the deepest regions of the lungs.

However, the hazard is not simply a matter of concentration. Engineered stone is manufactured from quartz that has already been crushed, milled, and processed before fabrication even begins. As workers cut and shape the finished product, additional particle fracturing occurs, creating fresh silica surfaces with unique chemical properties. These newly fractured particles are often more biologically reactive than naturally weathered mineral particles found in the environment.

For these reasons, researchers increasingly view engineered stone as a distinct material rather than merely another type of stone countertop. Although it may resemble natural stone in appearance, its composition, dust generation characteristics, and biological behavior are fundamentally different, creating a unique occupational health challenge that has become the focus of intensive scientific investigation around the world.
